Creating a Color Palette for Spring

Spring photography sessions are right around the corner and you’re probably trying to decide what to wear.

If you’re like me spring is a very happy time of year. The weather is warming, nature is stirring, flowers are blooming and summer vacations are in arms reach. Choosing a color palette for your spring session should reflect these feelings but not in the ways you may think. Here are my recommendations when planning for spring.

Patterns and Texture:

  • Don’t… mix and match patterns. I know we tend to choose florals, plaid, gingham and other busy and bright designs but keep it to one person per three to four people. When we stack patterns in a small group it creates a busy image that takes away from your beautiful faces.

  • Do… use textures instead to create depth in your images without taking away from your faces and emotions. When we’re talking about textures think linen, muslin, ruffles and fabrics that flow. Keep the fabric choices light weight to help emphasize our spring vibes.

“Main” Colors:

  • Don’t… choose multiple main colors that will compete for attention. This includes the very saturated/neon colors you see come out for spring and summer attire along with any colors that really pop off your background. See my blog on color theory for more information here.

  • Do… use one main color and then surround the person in that color with softer colors and neutrals that complement the main color. Just like the pattern notes above we dont want your wardrobe competing for attention.

Location

  • Don’t… Wear something that is going to compete with your background. For example if we are planning to shoot in a field of flowers a floral dress is not a great choice. There is more information about dressing for your background in the color theory blog linked above. Also dont choose a location that doesn’t help emphasize the time of year. An industrial area or place with no greenery for example do not say spring unless we incorporate floral elements of some kind.

  • Do… Choose something lively that won’t take away from your look but supports the spring feeling that we are trying to create. Things like flower fields, studio sessions with floral elements, areas with greenery etc are all great options for spring photo sessions.
