A Minimalist 3rd Birthday Session | Burlington NC Family Photographer

There is something incredibly special about getting to photograph the same family year after year.

This sweet family has trusted Alison Tapp Photography to document their son’s birthday portraits for three years now, and watching him grow has been such a joy. Their tradition is simple, intentional, and timeless. It works beautifully every single time.

A Consistent, Minimalist Birthday Portrait Tradition

Each year, we begin with clean, classic family portraits on a white background. Mom, dad, and birthday boy all wear white tees and jeans for a cohesive, minimalist look that will never go out of style.

During this portion of the session, we capture:

  • Full family portraits

  • Mom and son

  • Dad and son

  • Individual portraits of the birthday boy

This approach gives the family updated artwork for their home that feels bright, neutral, and timeless. Pieces they can display year after year without worrying about trends.

Adding Personality With a Themed Birthday Setup

After the classic portraits are complete, we shift into celebration mode.

This year’s theme? Cars, and it was the perfect fit for this energetic three-year-old.

We incorporated:

  • A black and white checkered number 3 balloon

  • His themed Cars tee shirt

  • Favorite character figurines he loves to play with

The result was the perfect balance: clean family portraits paired with fun, personality-filled birthday images that truly reflect this stage of life.

When Should Families Transition Away From Themed Birthday Sessions?

One of the great conversations we had during this session was about timing.

Mom asked me:

“When do we switch from themed birthday sessions to more traditional annual family portraits?”

The honest answer is: every family is different.

However, in my experience as a Burlington, NC family photographer, around age five is often a natural transition point. As children grow, many families begin to prefer more classic artwork for their walls rather than heavily themed imagery.

That said, there is no wrong choice.

The most important thing is continuing to document your family consistently as your children grow and change.

The Importance of Annual Family Portraits

Whether you choose themed birthday sessions, fall family photos, or studio portraits, the key is simple:

Keep showing up for the photos.

Because three years from now… five years from now… ten years from now… these images become part of your family’s legacy.

And getting to document that journey? It never gets old.
